National Black Theatre presents Learning Ring Shouts with Griffin Lotson
Event Description
These Dance Sanctuaries classes are in partnership with Social Impact’s and National Black Theatre’s The Gathering: A Place for Narrative Change. Join Gullah Geechee Ring Shout master instructor, Griffin Lotson, for a curated day of classes teaching the technique and history of the Ring Shout. All sessions will duplicate the basic principles of the Ring Shout and will be taught by curator, Griffin Lotson, Charmaine Minniefield, and Marsha Armstrong. Within each class there will be a,
- short video presentations of performances
- techniques concerning the history of the Ring Shout in combination with the Gullah Geechee Culture
- and education on the heart, mind, and soul of thetechnique of the original Ring Shout
Participants are encouraged to bring their newly learned skills and attend the subsequent “Traditional” Ring Shout community-based demonstration at ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵÃâ·Ñ°æapp on May 31st.

Ring Shouts taught by Griffin Lotson
Instructor: Griffin Lotson
Class will be taught by curator, Griffin Lotson. The course will cover multiple Ring Shout techniques, starting with will “zombie moves” of the feet and arms and hand clapping. After that, participants will learn polyrhythmic beats and counterclockwise movements. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable moveable clothing and footwear. Any participants learning the more feminine role are encouraged to wear long flowy skirts.
