  From February 1994 to August 1996, the Tuesday night open mic at It’s Your Mug was a community event that had a lasting impact on Washington’s poetry scene that continues to impact American poetry. Celebrate the event’s 30th anniversary with original host and founder Toni Asante Lightfoot, and a group of Mug regulars.

  Under the direction of JP Lynch, this performance by the award-winning band from Shenandoah Junction, WV, is a preview for the May 2, 2024 Regional Jazz at Lincoln Center Essentially Ellington Festival in Winchester, VA. The performance will include hits such as “Take the A Train,” “In a Mellow Tone,” and others.

  National Youth Poet Laureate Commencement

  Celebrating our nation’s top youth poets and leaders, this performance will feature National Youth Poet Laureate Finalists: Zoe Dorado (Alameda County), Stephanie Pacheco (New York City), Shnayjaah Jeanty (South Florida), and Aliyah American Horse (Nebraska). At the conclusion of the performances, the 2024 National Youth Poet Laureate will be announced.

  Join the Leadership Alliance for a conversation with Civil Rights leader Dr. Clarence B. Jones, and president Christina H. Paxson of Brown University moderated by Dr. Taiese Bingham-Hickman, Executive Director of The Leadership Alliance, as they explore the ways in which scholarship can provoke discussion, awareness, and action on racial justice and social equity in higher education. The program will feature performances by Dillard University Ladies Ensemble and the Gallaudet University Dance Group.

  Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company premieres Seeds of Toil: Three Stories of Asian American Resistance and Resilience, a modern dance triptych. The 50-minute dance focuses on the confluence of three agricultural histories of Asian Americans, featuring live music by collaborative pianist Dana Scott.
