Han Ethnicity Spinning Handkerchiefs Dance
Instructors: Jiaxi Chen
Assistant: Mabelle Liu
“Yangge,” which translates to “rice sprout song,” is a style of Han folk dance that originated from the working lives of farmers and villagers as a way for them to relieve the tedium of hard labor and celebrate bountiful harvests. There are many different regional variations of Yangge and the Northeastern style is notable for their 8-cornered handkerchiefs that can be spun, twirled, or thrown using a plethora of skillful motions. In this class, participants will learn basic dance movements and tricks from the Han ethnic Dongbei Yangge dance style, culminating in a short combination.

Props will be provided on a first come, first served basis to roughly the first 30 participants. You are encouraged to bring your own pair of spinning handkerchiefs if you have them.

Dai Ethnicity Parasol Dance
Instructors: Wen Qin
Assistant: Amy Pan
During the Tang Dynasty, the Chinese invented a unique type of parasol known as the “oil-paper umbrella.” Originally constructed from bamboo and paper, these umbrellas spread throughout east and southeast Asia and became important fixtures in many religious and wedding ceremonies by the time of the Ming Dynasty. Today, parasols have become an extremely popular prop in many different styles of Chinese dance. In this class, participants will learn basic parasol movements and then incorporate them into a short Dai ethnic dance combination.
