How to Be a Super

Perform as a Supernumerary with Washington National Opera!

A supernumerary (or Super for short) is, “a person who appears in an opera without speaking lines, or as part of a crowd; walk-on; extra.” Many of our operas have supernumeraries in them. Supers help to enhance crowd scenes. You might carry a spear or sword, break up fights as guards, strut around the stage as a courtesan, take someone to their “death” as an executioner, and represent many more colorful characters.

“Supering” is an excellent opportunity to try something new and to meet people. Furthermore, supers are able to work with world-renowned directors and designers, stand beside international singers, and experience total immersion in the sometimes crazy world of opera. Please see  about supering featured in The Washington Post’s Express.

Time commitment varies per opera and the rehearsals are generally in the evenings and on the weekends. Supers are paid a small stipend and receive two dress rehearsal passes for the show in which they appear.

We encourage people of all ages and walks of life to apply; however, men between the ages of 18-50 are the most needed. If you are interested, please complete the

Please fill out all the sections and submit a recent full body photo.  Your information will be added to our files and will be contacted with more specifics for suitable roles as they become available.
