The American Soldier

Millennium Stage

Douglas Taurel’s The American Soldier is a play based on letters from veterans and their families that span from the Revolution to recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In Commemoration of Veterans Day

“A relevant drama... many are in tears and asking why this play isn’t better known.”
—Peter Marks, The Washington Post

“The American Soldier is a beautiful, truthful, important one-man show that celebrates Americans of every class, ethnicity and race. It unites us around a core notion of sacrifice no matter how any of us might feel about the political purposes behind the wars they were asked to wage for all the rest of us.”
—Craig Lucas (Pulitzer Prize winner, Tony Award® nominee for The Light in the Piazza, Prelude to a Kiss)

Note from Playwright Douglas Taurel

The American Soldier is based on letters from veterans and their families that span from the Revolution to our recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The script has been created through a combination of exhaustive research, wording from actual letters sent from soldiers to their loved ones, and verbatim language lifted from countless interviews I’ve conducted with veterans and their family members. It is a heartwarming and poignant play that tells the stories of real-life veterans and the sacrifices they have made for our freedom. It is a way to pay tribute to their service and give us all a reminder of the enduring strength and resilience of the human spirit. My play is not a political play but rather a profoundly human story—a piece of theater that has been made to honor our veterans and their families and deepen our collective understanding of their experiences. As the creator of this play, I aim to elevate these stories to remind us of what we all have in common as Americans.

Previously performed at the Kennedy Center (twice), Off-Broadway (twice), the Library of Congress, the American Legion’s National Headquarters, and the New York Federal Reserve Bank to name a few, and earned a nomination for an Amnesty International Award.
