An intimate, career-spanning portrait of Ukrainian immigrant and punk legend Eugene Hütz, Scream of My Blood: A Gogol Bordello Story chronicles Hütz’s childhood journey to the U.S., his rise to fame with punk band Gogol Bordello, and his defiant return to Ukraine after the Russian invasion.

Gogol Bordello is a wild, visionary cadre of immigrant musicians, artists, and outsiders, whose border-blasting message of inclusion and personal liberation—coupled with their musical supercollider style—have made them one of the world’s most vital and explosive live acts.

Born in Ukraine to a family with Romani roots, Hütz fled his homeland in the wake of the Chernobyl disaster. When Gogol Bordello burst onto the Lower East Side scene in 1998, they captivated audiences and fellow musicians with their crackling energy and outrageous stage theatrics. Wearing elaborate costumes, igniting fires on stage, and often playing marathon concerts, the unpredictability of their live performances garnered a loyal fanbase and a tight-knit community. The band became the darlings of artists, tastemakers, and fashion icons, landing a breakthrough gig at the Whitney Biennial in 2002 that would raise their profile and launch their international career. Their embrace of multiculturalism—with members from Ecuador, Ethiopia, Belarus, and Russia—created a unique style that seamlessly blends the ethnic music of their respective homelands. Gogol Bordello brings together an unlikely fusion of sounds designed to evoke a cathartic experience in their audience with acts of music, theater, chaos, and sorcery.

Then came the war in Ukraine. In Scream of My Blood, Hütz and the band return to Ukraine, fostering the resilience, courage, and connection humans share through music. This act of solidarity provides a much-needed cathartic escape for soldiers and citizens alike. With family and friends in harm’s way, Hütz felt compelled to use his music as a weapon against the Russian invasion, using his platform to raise awareness for the Ukrainian people and becoming a cultural ambassador to the nation that first ignited his passion for music.

Through never-before-seen photo and video archives spanning two decades—including concert performances, behind-the-scenes footage, and intimate interviews—Scream of My Blood follows the epic journey of Eugene Hütz, Gogol Bordello frontman, as he uses music as a rallying cry for the cultural identity of Ukraine in a time of war. Now, after years of exorcizing demons through his music, he is going home to face down the biggest demon of all. A wild punk-rock-doc that explodes off the screen, Scream of My Blood is a testament to the power of speaking your truth, no matter the cost.
