Based on the hit Broadway musical and inspired by the Supremes, Dreamgirls follows Deena (Beyoncé Knowles), Effie (Jennifer Hudson), and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose) as they form an R&B trio in the 1960s called The Dreamettes. The group struggles to notch success until ambitious manager Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx) spots the act at a talent show and offers them the chance of a lifetime: to be backup singers for national sensation James Thunder (Eddie Murphy doing his best James Brown). The group goes on to score their own fame, renamed The Dreams. Deena becomes the lead singer and shining star, as the high cost of fame triggers ego dynamics. For her role as Effie White, Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar® for Best Supporting Actress in 2006, contributing to her EGOT status (winning an Emmy, Grammy®, Oscar®, and Tony®).
Films are screened with open captions, unless otherwise stated. For questions about accessibility or to request an accommodation, please contact the Accessibility Office at (202) 416-8727 or [email protected]
