Curated by Pier Penic from the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, this exhibit generates an informative and interactive display using archival video, text, and artifacts to tell this story of the Ring Shout and the people who used it.

There is an old African Proverb: “If you know the beginning well, the end shall not trouble you.” This display articulates the beginnings of the Ring Shout and the formation of the Gullah Geechee community, giving audience members attending The Gathering: A Space For Narrative Change a glimpse into the rich history surrounding the Ring Shout. The concept for this exhibition is curated by Pier Penic, who is under contract with the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art. She has generated an informative and interactive display that uses archival video, text, and artifacts to help tell the story of the Ring Shout and the people who used it. The exhibit displays in the case at the entrance of the Opera House.
