Akram Khan is one of the most innovative choreographers in the world, drawing on the Indian classical dance form kathak along with contemporary movement. With his bilingual command of both dance forms, Khan has developed a uniquely individual voice as a protagonist of cross-cultural encounters. He has most recently choreographed for the English National Ballet and has worked with BalletBoyz and Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan. In 2012, Khan’s choreography was featured in the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.
Four years after Akram Khan Company dazzled Kennedy Center audiences, the choreographer returns with GIGENIS, The generation of the Earth. In this new work, Khan boldly stages Greek mythology, ancient legends, and even family memories. GIGENIS gathers seven of the best Indian dancers in the world alongside seven classical musicians performing onstage. This Kennedy Center engagement offers one of the first performances of GIGENIS, so don’t miss this pioneering work from an expert of classical Indian dance.
