Brooklyn-based electronic indie band Balún differentiates itself through genre-morphing explorations and experimental creativity. Having broken out of the San Juan indie scene, the group brings a stateside Puerto Rican experience to its music. Loops and layers of shimmering synths, the fluttering of drums, and the strums of guitars mix with delicate, floating vocals for a whimsical atmosphere. Tied together with the magical realism of Angélica Negrón's lyrics, Balún calls its sound “dreambow,” echoing inspiration from reggaeton’s “dembow” pulse and dream pop.

Note from the Artists

Balún

“Our latest album Prisma Tropical focuses a vast field of genres and influences into a revelatory sound that evokes both of the band’s homes and the distance between them. In this concert, we will explore the physical, emotional, metaphorical, and illusory distance between these spaces and how these notions relate to the transnational experience in both Puerto Rico and NYC. This performance will showcase our Puerto Rican cultural influence, and connection to folk, classical, and popular musical traditions that have influenced and shaped the band with the hopes the audience will be fully immersed in our Prisma Tropical.”
