This February, the National Symphony Orchestra will collaborate with communities in Ward 4 and Takoma Park, Maryland to amplify joy, unity, and shared humanity through music and the arts. Partnering with local schools, community spaces, and organizations, we will honor the history of these neighborhoods, while also building new connections and relationships.

    Thu. Feb. 13, 2025 7p.m.

    The NSO presents an evening of timeless favorites by Beethoven, Strauss, and Copland—paired with vibrant dance rhythms inspired by tango, Andean folk, Argentinian ballet, and African American juba! This community celebration also features the world premiere of Karen LeFrak’s “SPACE” and Kennedy Center Composer-in-Residence Carlos Simon’s fiery tribute to Beethoven, Fate Now Conquers.

    NSO IYN Raymond Recreation Center Concert | Mei-Ann Chen

    Mon. Feb. 17, 2025 7p.m.

    Join us for a concert featuring works by Florence Price, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and William Grant Still along with music in the tradition of Hawaii, New Orleans, Mexico, India, and African American juba! The NSO will also perform Jennifer Higdon’s stirring arrangement of “Amazing Grace”, Carlos Simon’s Hellfighters’ Blues, and two world premieres as part of The Cartography Project—the Kennedy Center’s commissioning program engaging Black artists from around the nation.

NSO In Your Neighborhood 2024: Riverfront

March 18-24, 2024
Southwest Waterfront | Navy Yard | Capitol Riverfront | Buzzard Point | BEllevue

This March, the NSO will focus on the neighborhoods along the “Riverfront” in Wards 6 & 8. These areas have a rich legacy of community but have also experienced several waves of urban renewal and gentrification beginning in the 1940s. Marvin Gaye, Denyce Graves, and Thurgood Marshall all had ties to these neighborhoods.

The NSO’s In Your Neighborhood program brought the power of music to unite, empower, and celebrate the legacy and tradition of Ward 5. Performances were given in partnership with Wells Fargo, DC Department of Parks and Recreation, The National Shrine of the Basilica, Woodridge Library, Dunbar High School, Busboys and Poets, Joe’s Movement Emporium, Boundary Stone Pub, Buebird Sky Yoga, 11:Eleven Art Gallery, District Clay Center, Lincoln’s Cottage, Creative Grounds, The Spice Suite, American Poetry Museum, La Cosecha, and Art Enables.

In Your Neighborhood Over the Years

The NSO Performs with the String Queens at Turkey Thicket Recreation Center in March 2023.

The Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, a community-based organization that uses baseball and softball to foster positive character development and academic acheivement, hosts an NSO string quartet in their All-Star Pavilion in September 2019.

NSO harpist Adriana Horne performs for the staff and job seekers at the D.C. Department of Employment Services headquarters in September 2019.

An NSO wind quintet performs a chamber concert on the grounds of the U.S. National Arboretum in September 2019.

While waiting for the doors to open at Turkey Thicket Recreation Center, NSO Youth Fellows, Christian León, Haley Gruwell, and Mira Kim, perform in the lobby as part of a greater activation with NSO swag bags, Ward 5 Mutual Aid grocery bags, an art workshop by Stephanie Kiah, and more!

The NSO presents a chamber concert in collaboration with the GoGo Symphony at Chuck Brown Memorial Park in September 2019.

The DC Eagle, one of D.C.'s oldest and largest LGBTQ bars hosts a string bass quartet in September 2019.
