Giuseppe Verdi: Otello
Gianandrea Noseda speculates that his artistic personality combines “German richness and precision, Russian dark sound and storytelling, and the spirit and cantabile of Italianità. And that dark Russian sound can bring Italian opera to life.”
Experience the thunderous music of Otello in the hands of our opera-loving Music Director. Verdi’s score offers a thrilling exploration of uncontrolled human emotion at its most extreme. Hailed as a pinnacle of Italian operatic repertoire, Verdi’s transformation of the Shakespeare play was described by The New York Times as an “ascent towards a higher musical plane” following its 1887 premiere at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala.
Celebrating Noseda’s 60th Birthday
As one of the world’s most sought-after opera conductors, Gianandrea Noseda divides his time between leading the National Symphony Orchestra and serving as General Music Director of the Zürich Opera House. This season, we’re thrilled to launch a new series of Opera in Concert with Noseda, beginning with Verdi’s Otello.
“When I was around 15 years old watching television in Milan, I caught the opening night of Otello live at Teatro alla Scala. It was revelatory. I’ve loved opera ever since.
“It’s especially inspiring to present opera in concert form, like this. A symphonic orchestra phrases music like a vocalist—the musicians intuitively know how to breathe with the singers through each note. I can never decide which I love more: conducting symphonic repertoire or opera. That’s what keeps my attention and art alive.”
