SOCIAL IMPACT
Spooky Action Theater (SAT) is a dynamic theater company that cultivates global visions, bold aesthetics, and urgent conversations.
SAT takes its name from a phenomenon of quantum mechanics in which two particles, without ever touching, become entangled so that a change in one is mirrored by change in the other. We believe a good play imparts a special kind of rapture and leaves both artists and audiences different in its aftermath.
SAT’s mission is to recharge people’s imaginative, intuitive, and emotional core. Our versatile performance space in the Dupont/Logan Circle neighborhood accommodates multiple seating and staging configurations and transforms for each production, ensuring completely unique theatrical experiences each time audience members arrive for a performance.
For their Local Theatre Residency at the REACH, SAT will be conducting a developmental workshop for the new play Cracking Zeus through a collaboration between professional artists and Howard University acting students.
Cracking Zeus
Written by Christopher Hampton
Staged reading directed by Reginald L. Douglas
Hera, a goddess with a grudge to settle, has found her husband Zeus’ newest illegitimate child. On the outside, Baniaha is a pillar of his community: he helps his mother run her church while mentoring orphaned youth. On the inside, he is lost: the mystery of his paternity leaves him yearning for answers. When Hera arrives to exact her revenge with the help of Rufus, a homeless crack addict she thinks she can exploit, relationships are strained and faith is put to the test. This wildly inventive dark comedy is a present-day myth about religion, dependency, and redemption.
