Lila Holyoke
Lila Holyoke is a sophomore at Barnard College and The Juilliard School, studying under the tutelage of Natasha Brofsky and Clara Kim. Lila was a Kovner Fellow at Juilliard from 2022–2023 while she completed an undergraduate artist certificate. She began studying cello when she was five at the Special Music School with Yari Bond. Lila Studied at Juilliard Pre-College throughout high school. She graduated from Pre-College with distinction in performance. In galas, she has opened for pianists Jonathan Biss and Orli Shaham and played principal cello in a small ensemble led by Joshua Bell. At age ten, she performed with orchestra as winner of the ISO concerto competition. In 2016, she premiered Augusta Read Thomas’ work Rainbow Bridge to Paradise. In 2023, she placed alternate in Juilliard’s anual cello concerto competition. Lila has been featured in masterclasses with Orli Shaham, Danny Philipps, Gregory Beaver, Ani Kavafian, Astrid Schween, Mary Peckham, Steve Doane, Hannah Roberts, Clive Greensmith, Gil Kalish, Joel Krosnick, Fred Sherry, Rebecca Fischer, and the Cavani Quartet. As an avid chamber musician, Lila was part of a piano trio, Trilogy, for six years. Trilogy was a semifinalist at the 2019 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. They performed at Carnegie’s Weill Hall, the Rose Studio at Chamber Music Society, the National Arts Club and on WNYC. They received the NYYS Director’s Award for commitment and achievement. In 2021, Lila was part of a string quartet that performed at a Gala honoring composer Jesse Montgomery. Lila has spent her summers at the Kinhaven and Greenwood Music Schools, at Meadowmount studying with Hans Jørgen Jensen, as well as Yellowbarn’s Young Artists Program and Kneisel Hall.
