Ian Chang Composer

Mexico City-based composer/producer/drummer Ian Chang makes electronic music physical. Using drums to control and manipulate samples, Chang brings human fluidity to a metronomic genre. The result is a seamless marriage of raw performative intensity and sophisticated sound design. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Chang was shaped by the city’s diversity and vibrancy.

When Chang describes his creative process, the phrase “third culture” keeps coming up. Born in the colony of Hong Kong in 1988, Chang has lived a nomadic life. Stationed out of New York for 10 years, he built an impressive roster of collaborators such as CHVRCHES, KAZU, Jaga Jazzist, Woodkid, Dave Douglas, Moses Sumney, Jennifer Koh, Pathos Trio, Laura Perrudin, Joan As Policewoman, Body Language, Matthew Dear, Rafiq Bhatia, Emily Wells, Unloved, Gracie & Rachel, and Rubblebucket, among others, all while performing internationally and recording as a member of Son Lux.

Since 2014, Chang has been a member of the band Son Lux. Together, they have released three albums and numerous EPs, and given over 500 performances worldwide. Most recently, they scored the film Everything Everywhere All At Once for A24 which was nominated for Best Original Score at the Oscars® and BAFTAs, and included collaborations with David Byrne, André Benjamin, Mitski, Moses Sumney, Randy Newman, and more.
