Ignacio Alcover

Ignacio Alcover, born in Barcelona, is the founder of Musica Aperta and serves as its Artistic Director. He has performed throughout the United States as well as in Europe and the Far East. He was the soloist in the Boston Premiere of Henri Dutilleux's "Tout un monde lointain..." for cello and orchestra, and has recorded for Centaur Records and 4-TAY label. Live radio performances include France Musique, Radio Nacional Española and National Public Radio.

In addition, Mr. Alcover has collaborated in the theater as a performer and composer for the production of the two-man show "Un Home Apassionat", presented on both sides of the Atlantic. Critically acclaimed by the press, it was described by the Diario de Barcelona as "an authentic and marvelous appeal to intelligence and sensitivity" He was also a member of the Grup Instrumental Catalá, a contemporary music ensemble in residence at the Fundacion Miro in Barcelona, responsible for more than one hundred world premieres. In Washington DC, he has appeared in concert and recorded with ensembles that range from the XXI Century Consort to the Thievery Corporation.

Mr. Alcover has been the recipient of grants from the Fundación Juan March and the Fulbright Commission. A member of the cello section of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, he currently teaches at George Mason University. Mr. Alcover has served on the faculty of the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University and served as Chairman of the Faculty at the Washington Conservatory of Music. He was recently awarded La Cruz de Oficial de la Orden de Isabel la Católica by King Juan Carlos I of Spain.
