Welcome Letter from WNO Leadership
Dear Friends of the WNO:
After the curtain came down last season on our successful production of Carmen, we were eavesdropping in the lobby on a family with two teenage kids. The kids were gushing and using the word “awesome” about what they had just seen. As parents ourselves, we know it can be rare to get kids to talk about what they are experiencing, much less talk in such a positive manner. Theater magic, indeed!
It was such a thrill for all of us to finally welcome you back to our “home” and come together for the live experience – the communal moment of sharing laughter and tears in a grand space created for just that purpose. Storytelling was meant to be a shared activity; it does not work without the circular energy from the stage to audience and back. Everything feels and sounds better when it is being created and received in the same moment.
We at WNO are coming off the high of our Summer Opera Institute, a stand-out singer training program for high school students that we collaboratively run with Kennedy Center Education. The Opera Institute is an important means of introducing the power of live theatrical storytelling to a new generation.
There are so many ways in which the choices of one generation influence the next, and the first two operas of the season will look at the darker side of the familial bond, in which complicated family histories propel compelling dramas. We are leading off the season with four female powerhouses: dramatic soprano Latonia Moore as Leonora, mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis as Azucena, mezzo-soprano Katarina Dalayman as Klytämnestra, and the incomparable dramatic soprano Christine Goerke as Elektra. These incomparable artists take roles as some of opera’s most iconic mothers and daughters, in thrilling theatrical settings under the musical leadership of Principal Conductor Evan Rogister and, new to our podium, Michele Gamba.
Now, once again, we open our doors and welcome you back for live music theater and opera all season long. You can find us making musical and theatrical magic in our three homes: the Opera House, the Eisenhower, and the Terrace Theater, as well as venues away from the Kennedy Center, from Audi Field to the Renwick Gallery. We look forward to having you join us!
Yours,
Tim and ’Cesca

SYNOPSIS
When the King of Aragon dies without heirs, claimants to the throne include Ferdinand de Trastamara, nephew of the late King, Count Fradique de Luna of a powerful noble house, and Jaime de Aragón, Count of Urgel. When Fernando is named King, the Count of Urgel raises a rebellion to press his claims to the throne. Among his commanders is Manrico, an impressive fighter of unknown origins. The leader of the royal forces is Count di Luna.
BACKGROUND
“One of the strangest and most powerful phenomena in the world of Italian opera”
Fresh from the success of Rigoletto (1851), the composer Giuseppe Verdi, looking for a new kind of story, found his inspiration in the El trovador (1836), by Spanish playwright Antonio García Gutiérrez. The fast-paced and fantastic play braids three high-stakes plots into a complex and compelling skein: a civil war pitting a nobleman’s army against a band of rebels; a love triangle in which a young noblewoman is pursued by a Count, but only has eyes for a mysterious troubadour; and a story of trauma and revenge, in which a woman on the outskirts of society seeks retribution after being forced, as a child, to witness her mother’s brutal murder.

Jealousy. Sorcery. Vengeance. Forbidden love. Verdi’s melodrama set in 16th century Spain has it all for the “perfect” opera night out, with one rousing aria and chorus after another. Washington National Opera audiences last saw the sweeping tale in 2004, and it returns with grand sets, elaborate period costumes, soaring melodies, and the instantly recognizable Anvil Chorus. Few singers can master Verdi’s demanding vocal acrobatics, and a world-class cast assembles now to give justice to one of the most spectacular works in history!
Manrico, a troubadour, and Count di Luna are bitter rivals in love and war, but they share a secret origin that irrevocably links them. Manrico’s mother, Azucena, carries a secret of her own. When her tragic past returns to haunt her, Azucena’s allegiance will be put to the test.
'The Anvil Chorus' from Il trovatore
"Di quella pira" from Il trovatore
