A self-taught prodigy, José André discovered the piano at the age of three and a half and from then on, he has been fascinated with music. His mantra is: “Life is a gift,” and he lives each day to the fullest, exploring his God-given talents. By the time he was six, Montaño formed his first Latin Jazz band, playing piano and keyboards at eight. Montaño named his band the José André Jazz Trio and, over the past ten years, has developed a particular musical style that includes swing, Latin jazz, bossa nova, samba, and bebop—all of which fall within either the classical or traditional jazz style. With this band, he has performed at large and small venues around the world, including festivals of different genres such as jazz, rock, blues, and Latin American folk music. He has been invited and has performed at global venues in Finland, Malaysia, Italy, Brazil, among others, as well as locally in Washington D.C. at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, at the annual D.C. Jazz Festival, at Blues Alley, and other venues.
He has also shared stages with renowned national and international musicians from Brazil, the United States, and many other countries. Currently a student at the prestigious Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Montaño is also being mentored by world-renowned pianist Cyrus Chestnut. As part of a season-long series of events sponsored by Mars Urban Arts Initiative to showcase Washington, D.C. Latinx artists, Washington Performing Arts presented the José André Trio. Montano lists a broad range of influences such as Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, among others. His talent has led him to be on the list for the piano chair in several big bands, including the Bethesda Blues and Jazz Youth Orchestra, the Blues Alley Youth Orchestra, the NJW All-Star Jazz Orchestra, NYO Jazz Orchestra, and the Duke Ellington School of the Arts Jazz Orchestra. In 2022 and 2023, Montaño was chosen to participate in the National Peer-to-Peer program of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. Participants in this program are selected from some of the nation’s most talented student jazz musicians. Named as one of the “Next 50 Leaders” during the 50th Anniversary of the Kennedy Center, Montaño uses his art to help open pathways towards a more inspired and inclusive world. He is the winner of the 2019 VSA International Young Soloists Competition, a Jean Kennedy Smith Arts and Disability Program that recognizes talented emerging artists from all over the world. During the 2nd annual Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind “Lighting the Way” Gala in 2018, Montaño was honored as one of the distinguished awardees recognized for his creative talents and achievements. His first CD, Ama a Todos, was recorded in January 2013. The album features several original compositions as well as editions of the Bolivian folklore, bossa nova, and jazz. This year, 2024, holds new adventures in music for the innovative creativity of José André.
Justin Kauflin
Justin Kauflin is an award-winning jazz pianist who The New York Times says, “favors a clarity of touch and ideas... his writing is balanced tempering post-bop intricacies with the assurances of the gospel church.” After losing his sight at the age of 11, Kauflin gravitated towards playing jazz piano, despite having a background in classical violin and piano. He studied with Liz Barnes (Governor's School for the Arts) and John Toomey (Old Dominion University) and was performing jazz professionally by age 14, most notably with the Jae Sinnett Trio. In 2008, he graduated summa cum laude from William Paterson University where he studied with his heroes, Mulgrew Miller and Harold Mabern, as well as being mentored by and performing with the legendary trumpet/flugelhorn player, Clark Terry (2010 Grammy Award® winner for Lifetime Achievement in Jazz).
As leader, player, composer, and producer, Justin Kauflin has released 10 recordings to date and has collaborated on 30+ albums as sideman. In 2015, Kauflin had the incredible honor of performing on Oscar Peterson's personal Bosendorfer for "Oscar with Love," along with 16 world class pianists for Kelly Peterson and Mack Avenue Records. March 2023 marked Kauflin's debut live-recorded vinyl, Justin Kauflin Trio: Live at Sam First by Sam First Records.
Justin Kauflin scored and is featured in the Oscar® shortlisted documentary Keep On Keepin' On, directed by fellow musician, friend, and award-winning director Al Hicks, and Oscar® and Grammy Award® winning composer, Dave Grusin. During the five-year process, Kauflin was picked up for management by Quincy Jones and performed as a solo artist on his World Tours. The Justin Kauflin Trio went on to perform worldwide, as well as conduct jazz workshops from 2015 to 2020. During the pandemic shutdown, Kauflin focused on film scoring and sound design, completing projects for full-length documentaries, commercials, and trailers.
Kauflin shares Clark Terry's passion for jazz education through the Keep On Keepin' On Jazz Outreach, which includes a screening of the documentary, Q&A, student workshops, student jam sessions, and concerts. As a U.S. Department of State Jazz Ambassador, Kauflin gives workshops and concerts worldwide. He has been an adjunct faculty member/adjudicator for the Monterey Jazz Festival, Centrum Port Townsend Jazz, Vail Jazz Workshop, Lionel Hampton Jazz, and Notre Dame Jazz with John Clayton and Jazz Maui with Katie Thiroux.
