Program

Under the direction of nā kumu hula (masters of Hawaiian dance) Vicky Holt Takamine and Jeffrey Kānekaiwilani Takamine celebrate 35 years of Pua Ali‘i ‘Ilima with presentations of hula kahiko (ancient style Hawaiian dance) and hula 'auana (modern style Hawaiian dance) with special guests Robert Uluwehi Cazimero, Hālau Nā Kamalei and Kuana Torres Kahele. Pua Ali‘i ‘Ilima is the hālau hula (school of traditional Hawaiian dance) founded by Vicky Holt Takamine in 1977. The hālau was named by Vicky’s kumu hula, Maiki Aiu Lake, and means the Royal ‘Ilima Blossom, alluding to a lineage of descent from Hawaiian royalty. The hālau participates in cultural festivals and events throughout Hawai‘i and the world. Hālau Nā Kamalei, is the only male hālau hula in the Hawaiian Islands. Brought together by Robert Cazimero, one of the most respected Kumu Hula of Hawaiian dance, the men of Nā Kamalei perform around the world, and for 35 years, they have carried on the tradition of male hula while dispelling deep-rooted stereotypes of grass skirt girls and coconut bras.
