Meet the Artists

  • Pianist and Music Director

    Cyrus Chestnut

    Born in 1963, Chestnut started his musical career at the age of three, playing piano at the Mount Calvary Star Baptist Church at the age of six in his hometown of Baltimore, MD. By age nine, he was studying classical music at the Peabody Preparatory Institute inBaltimore. In the fall of 1981, Cyrus began jazz education in Boston, MA at the Berklee College of Music.

    Brinae Ali

    Alexandria “Brinae Ali” Bradley, born and raised in Flint, Michigan, is an interdisciplinary artist who believes in using the power of the arts to transform the conditions of the human spirit. When she is not traveling and performing, she is giving back to young people and grass roots organizing. Bradley served as the artistic director of Tapology, Inc. a youth based outreach program in Flint, that believes in preserving the art of tap and jazz culture through education and performance.

    Rasul A-Salaam

    Rasul A-Salaam, a Native of Harlem, NYC has felt the call to express his love for life & music with his voice since the tender age of 3. By age seven, he was known for lending his wide ranging vocal talents and critical ear to various  local choirs and ensembles, as a supporting vocalist, arranger, producer, soloist and even as a teacher/coach. Rasul officially began his career in 2005, touring the world singing background.

  • Charles Carter

    Charles D. Carter demonstrates great artistic versatility and musical prowess in his approach to bass-baritone repertoire. In the end of 2019 he started performing as well as part of the creative team on the Kanye West operas “Nebuchadnezzar” and “Mary” which thrilled audiences at the Hollywood bowl in Los Angeles, Lincoln Center in NYC, Miami, Florida as well as Calabasas ,California.

    Wycliffe Gordon

    Wycliffe Gordon experiences an impressive career touring the world performing to great acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Jazz Journalists Association has awarded him “Trombonist of the Year” for a record-breaking 15 times, and he’s topped Downbeat Critics Poll for “Best Trombone” for an unprecedented six times (2020, 2018, 2016, 2014, 2013 & 2012).  

  • Cassondra James Kellam

    Cassondra James Kellam is a New York City based actor, musician, and academic.  Her recent theater credits include Mama Rose (Gypsy: Theater Aspen), Mary Church Terrell (Suffs: Public Theater) and Erzulie (Once on This Island: Broadway and 1st National Tour). Recent TV and film credits include The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Schmigadoon, Harlem,  Lyle, Lyle Crocodile, and Spirited.

  • Sean Jones

    Music and spirituality have always been intertwined in the artistic vision of trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator, and activist Sean Jones. Mr. Jones sang and performed as a child with the church choir in his hometown of Warren, Ohio, and switched from playing the drums to the trumpet at the age of 10. Mr. Jones is a musical chameleon, comfortable in any musical setting no matter the role or genre.

    Malcolm J. Merriweather

    GRAMMY nominated conductor Malcolm J. Merriweather is Director of the New York Philharmonic Chorus and Music Director of New York City’s The Dessoff Choirs and Orchestra. He is a sought-after interpreter of symphonic choral works most recently conducting grand performances of Bach’s St. John Passion, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Handel’s Messiah.

  • Mari-Yan Pringle

    Mari-Yan Pringle is a Winner (District) and Encouragement Award Recipient (Southeastern Region) of the Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions as well as a three-time Winner of the Schuyler Foundation for Career Bridges, Inc. Grant.  She was also a semi-finalist of both the Elizabeth Connell Prize for Dramatic Voices (under the auspices of the Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonygne Foundation, Inc.) and the Lyric Opera of Chicago's Ryan Opera Center.

  • Marcus Printup

    Born and raised in Conyers, Georgia, Marcus Printup's first musical experiences came from hearing the fiery gospel music his parents sang in church. He would later discover jazz as a senior in high school. Marcus attended Georgia State University, then transferred to the University of North Florida on a music scholarship. It was during his studies at UNF that he competed and won the prestigious International Trumpet Guild Jazz Trumpet Competition

    Scott Robinson

    Multi-instrumentalist/composer Scott Robinson has been a highly active presence on the New York-based creative music scene for nearly 40 years, appearing on some 280 CDs. Scott performs on both brass and reed instruments, and is equally at home with the traditional and the adventurous.
