Step into the role of a space explorer and create a collaborative, personalized Martian spacesuit in this engaging, hands-on workshop with Anurita Chandola, a Spacewear and Textiles Artist. Perfect for curious minds of all ages, this activity blends teamwork, storytelling, and creativity to craft a unique suit that reflects the group’s collective imagination and individuality.
Children are invited to bring a small object that they would like to take with them to Mars (ideally something that fits in their palm) to contribute to the design. Examples include a flower from their garden, a family photo, a favorite stuffed toy, a piece of a cherished blanket, or even a superhero cutout. These items will come together to personalize the spacesuit, making it a shared creation filled with personal stories and meaningful touches.
Participants will learn a variety of textile techniques, including basic embroidery stitches to add decorative details, flower pounding to transfer natural patterns onto fabric, and layering and composing materials for a cohesive design. They’ll also experiment with attaching elements using glue, needle, and thread, while exploring how personal items can be transformed into meaningful pieces of art.
This workshop invites participants to think creatively about what they’d take with them to Mars and why and work together to attach their chosen items, making the spacesuit uniquely theirs. It’s a wonderful opportunity to blend creativity and personal meaning while developing hands-on textile skills.
Children aged 4 and above are welcome. Please note: children must be accompanied by an adult. The workshop is ideal for ages up to 16.
