Program Note

The Nutcracker was Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s final full-length theatrical work. Although he loved the E.T.A. Hoffmann story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King , he disliked the libretto that came with this commission from the Russian Imperial Theater. Tchaikovsky and choreographer Marius Petipa disagreed so vehemently that the composer finally asked to be released from the commission. Fortunately for all of us, the theater persuaded him to soldier on. Intermittent progress stopped completely during Tchaikovsky’s visit to America for the inauguration of Carnegie Hall (with a side trip to Philadelphia’s Academy of Music). While abroad, Tchaikovsky learned that his beloved sister, Sasha, had died. It is thought that he had her in mind while composing the magical music for the Sugar Plum Fairy. This magic can be credited in part to the singular sound of the celeste, a combination keyboard/glockenspiel. Tchaikovsky won the race among his fellow composers to be the first to feature this invention in a major orchestral work. Among the many other extraordinary orchestral effects in The Nutcracker are the astonishing rhythms in the Waltz of the Snowflakes and the flute trills near the beginning of Act II.

The Pennsylvania Ballet premiere of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® was made possible by major support from The William Penn Foundation and Christa and Calvin Schmidt. Philadelphia Ballet also wishes to thank the many donors who underwrote costumes in this production.

The Nutcracker Synopsis

Marie Stahlbaum and her younger brother, Fritz, impatiently await their family’s Christmas Eve party. Finally, the guests arrive. They exchange gifts, toast one another, and dance the night away. The mysterious Herr Drosselmeyer (Marie and Fritz’s uncle) and his apprentice suddenly appear. They bring with them three life-sized dolls: Harlequin, Columbine, and the Toy Soldier. Drosselmeyer introduces Marie to his apprentice and gives her a Nutcracker. Envious of his sister, Fritz grabs the Nutcracker and stomps on it. Marie weeps, but Drosselmeyer comforts her and mends the broken toy with his handkerchief. Marie and her friends sing a lullaby to the Nutcracker and to the other Christmas dolls. The party ends, and the tired guests bid the Stahlbaums goodnight.
