Meet the Artists

  • Vince Mendoza

Vince Mendoza has been at the forefront of the jazz and contemporary music scene as a composer, conductor, and recording artist for the last 25 years. According to All about Jazz, Mendoza “daringly expands the vernacular by including elements of abstract impressionism, romanticism, and a highly unorthodox palette to position him as the clear and natural successor to the late Gil Evans.”

  • Larry Klein

Larry Klein is a record producer, musician, and songwriter who is four-time Grammy®–winner and 10-time Grammy®–nominated. He has been nominated for the Producer Of The Year (non-classical) three times. His latest release is Here It Is: A Tribute To Leonard Cohen, Klein’s tribute to his dear friend, the great singer, songwriter and poet Leonard Cohen. After Cohen’s passing, Klein found himself selecting many songs from various periods of Leonard’s work to revisit and re-interpret.

Special Guests

  • Madison Cunningham

Madison Cunningham is a Grammy Award®–winning artist and songwriter known for her “wonderfully tangled imagery and cutting self-awareness” (NPR). As a guitarist, Madison has pushed the boundaries of a conventional singer-songwriter as her “guitar work is both classic and wildly emotive, and her soaring vocals are pristine and inspired” (Consequence). Madison first picked up a guitar at age seven, and by age 12 was singing and performing alongside her five siblings in church.

  • Ben Folds

Ben Folds is widely regarded as one of the major music influencers of our generation. The Emmy-nominated singer-songwriter-composer has created an enormous body of genre-bending music that includes pop albums with Ben Folds Five, multiple solo albums, and numerous collaborative records. He currently tours as a pop artist, performs with some of the world’s greatest symphony orchestras, and serves as the first ever Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

  • Bill Frisell

Bill Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 40 years and many celebrated recordings, whose catalog has been cited by Downbeat as “the best recorded output of the decade.” In recent years, Frisell has forged a distinctive and fruitful collaboration with the Blue Note label, releasing HARMONYValentine, and FOUR to great acclaim. “Frisell has had a lot of practice putting high concept into a humble package. Long hailed as one of the most distinctive and original improvising guitarists of our time, he has also earned a reputation for teasing out thematic connections with his music. There’s a reason that Jazz at Lincoln Center had him program a series called Roots of Americana” (The New York Times).

  • Don Henley

Best known as co-founder of the legendary rock band the Eagles, as well as an influential solo artist, Don Henley has maintained an extraordinary commitment to music and various philanthropic efforts throughout his career, including a dedication to environmental issues and artists’ rights. As a solo artist and member of the Eagles, the East Texas native has received countless accolades, numerous gold and platinum records, and performed sold-out concert tours worldwide.

  • Gregory Porter

All Rise is Gregory Porter's sixth studio album, marking a return to Porter's beloved original songwriting—heart-on-sleeve lyrics imbued with everyday philosophy and real-life detail, set to a stirring mix of jazz, soul, blues, and gospel.

  • Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks

Husband and wife, guitarist Derek Trucks and singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschiof the Grammy®–winning Tedeschi Trucks Band are known globally for their world-class musicianship that seamlessly blends distinctive genres of American music.

  • Trisha Yearwood*

    *Friday night performance only

Following three decades in the spotlight, numerous Grammy®, CMA® and ACM® Awards, countless multiplatinum certifications, and millions of fans entertained, the same passion still motivates and moves Trisha Yearwood. The singer, actress, author, chef, personality, and entrepreneur derives deep fulfillment from simply walking up to a microphone and pouring her heart out by way of a celebrated powerhouse voice.

  • National Symphony Orchestra

The 2023–2024 season is the National Symphony Orchestra’s 93rd season, and Music Director Gianandrea Noseda’s seventh season. Noseda serves as the Orchestra’s seventh Music Director, joining the NSO’s legacy of distinguished leaders: Christoph Eschenbach, Leonard Slatkin, Mstislav Rostropovich, Antal Doráti, Howard Mitchell, and Hans Kindler. Meet the Guest Musicians and Singers

  • Immanuel Wilkins

The music of saxophonist and composer, Immanuel Wilkins, is filled with empathy and conviction, bonding arcs of melody and lamentation to pluming gestures of space and breath. Listeners were introduced to this riveting sound with his acclaimed debut album Omega, which was named the #1 Jazz Album of 2020 by The New York Times. The album also introduced his remarkable quartet with Micah Thomas on piano, Daryl Johns on bass, and Kweku Sumbry on drums, a tight-knit unit that Wilkins features once again on his stunning sophomore album The 7th Hand.

  • Scott Colley

Scott Colley’s stature as a leading bassist in the field of improvised music is well known, and easily measured. He has been called “one of the leading bassists of our postbop era, and a composer-bandleader of quietly serious resolve” by The New York Times, while musical colleagues, like saxophonist Joshua Redman, praise him for being “one of the most musical bassists playing today. To me, he seems to have this natural, intuitive, empathic sense of how to bring the most out of the other musicians and the music he is playing.”

  • Greg Leisz

The word "ubiquitous" is usually placed in front of pedal steel player and guitarist Greg Leisz's name. With good reason—his resumé is daunting, boasting spots with Joni Mitchell, Sheryl Crow, Peter Case, Paul Westerberg, Me'Shell NdegeOcello, Victoria Williams, Joe Cocker, Dave Alvin, k.d. lang, Wilco, Lucinda Williams, Bruce Cockburn, Shawn Colvin, Paula Cole, and the Ventures. Not to be pigeonholed in just roots music, Leisz (pronounced "Lees") has also played with the likes of Beck, Matthew Sweet, Bad Religion, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Brian Wilson.

  • Kendrick Scott

Drummer and composer, Kendrick Scott, presents Corridors, his first compositional treatment of trio context—saxophone, bass, and drums—and third album for Blue Note Records. The anticipated follow-up to A Wall Becomes a Bridge, Scott’s much-lauded 2019 release with his band Oracle, Corridors unveils an exposed rumination from the Houston-born artist and his acclaimed collaborators: saxophonist Walter Smith III and bassist Reuben Rogers. “I often write about something that I’m going through,” says Scott, “but for this record I wanted to zoom out from my perspective and instead, try to deal with everyone’s. I had to make myself uncomfortable in an entirely new way.”

  • Paul Cornish

Los Angeles–based pianist and composer, Paul Cornish, strives to inspire freedom and collaboration in his music and community. Hailing from Houston where he was a student at the prestigious High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Cornish was one of seven jazz prodigies worldwide selected to be awarded a full fellowship to attend the esteemed Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz at UCLA.

  • Amy Keys

You’ve heard Amy Keys’ voice on everything from the Emmy Award®–winning NBC NASCAR Superbowl commercial and the Stanley Cup Playoffs to Tarzan Tarzan 2, and seen her singing for Coca Cola and performing a duet with Jamie Dornan on the beach in Barb & Starr. Keys is a very versatile and accomplished vocalist, writer, producer and actor.

  • Lara Johnston

Lara Johnston is emerging as one of pop music’s most dynamic voices. Her rich, soulful vocal tone has afforded her the opportunity to perform around the world, both on her own, and as a backing vocalist for artists like Don Henley and Belinda Carlisle. Most recently, Johnston has been spending time between Los Angeles and Nashville, writing and recording a new EP that she plans to release this summer.

  • Lily Elise aka Lils

Lily Elise, aka Lils, is a singer and songwriter best known as a finalist on NBC’s The Voice. Elise has sung backgrounds for artists such as Don Henley, Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo, Gwen Stefani, James Taylor, Joe Walsh, Neil Young, Stephen Stills, and many other legendary musicians. Elise's voice has been heard on national ad campaigns including Venus, Covergirl, State Farm, Applebees, and many more. Under the moniker Lils, her solo music has over 35 million streams.

Program Notes

Steve Holtzman, EXECUTIVE Producer

In the early autumn of 2022 Larry Klein shared an album with me he conceived, produced, and was about to release on Blue Note Records called Here It Is: A Tribute to Leonard Cohen. I knew Larry and Leonard were close friends and that Larry had produced beautiful covers of Leonard's work so I excitedly hit the play button. I was not prepared. The album made me feel Leonard Cohen's lyrics in a way I never had before. Intimate, moving, a smile here then a tear. When the last note faded I sat in silence taking it all in. I wanted to find a way to help share this with the world. Larry and I approached the Kennedy Center about a live concert version of the album and Matthew Winer and Justin Ellis were more than open to the idea. They have been incredibly generous with their time, talent and knowledge. Their idea of adding the National Symphony Orchestra into the mix brought the concept to another level.

Larry Klein, Music Director

We all have friends or family who, when they pass, we have to reconcile ourselves to the fact we are going to miss them every day. Leonard Cohen is a friend who occupied this kind of space in my life. I came away from every conversation with him changed in some sense. Sometimes laughing, sometimes re-assessing a view on something, or sometimes just being reminded of how serious the business of writing and revision was. He always traveled with a little notebook and a pen, never wanting to let a good line slip by without being taken down or developed. When asked about writing he always said that he hated it. “It’s too hard” he would say. He was a merciless editor of his own work. After he passed, I found myself wanting to work with his songs on nearly every album that I worked on for a number of years. I decided to see if I could facilitate doing a whole album of his great songs; re-imagining them through a looking glass, and with an eclectic group of great voices that I loved. I approached Don Was and Blue Note about the idea, and thankfully he said yes.
