The Boulanger Initiative

The Boulanger Initiative mission is to promote music composed by women through performance, education, and commissions. Performance: a concert series devoted to presenting music composed by women, past and present, striving to challenge established inequalities in concert programming. Education: lectures, publications, and masterclasses to help expose students and audiences to the idea that women have composed, and do compose, music. Commissions: supporting the composition and performance of new music, to foster awareness, create possibility, and inspire creativity. Our aim is to work towards greater inclusivity, and to enrich our collective understanding of what music is, has been, and can be. Our performance series will begin with WoCo Concert Series Festival, a music launch festival in Washington, D.C. on March 8-10, 2019. We will continue the series with a full season of concerts for the 2019-2020 season. Every concert will be dedicated to presenting music composed by women, with an initial focus on repertoire for chamber ensembles and soloists. Our education and outreach events will begin with school visits (elementary through university level) leading up to our launch festival. The festival will also include masterclasses, workshops, and panel discussions with performers, composers, and educators. Our third focus area, the commissioning of new works, is still under development and will begin during our 2019-20 season.
