Thomas Cupples joined the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) as second trumpet in 2005, appointed by Music Director Leonard Slatkin. Prior to joining the NSO he was the principal trumpet of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and the Haifa Symphony Orchestra in Haifa, Israel. From fall of 2012 through the summer of 2014, Tom performed the role of assistant principal trumpet in the NSO, and during the 2014–2015 season he served as the principal trumpet of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Tom performed as guest principal trumpet with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra in the opening of their 2012 season and has also played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Colorado Symphony, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Israel Kibbutz Chamber Orchestra, and New World Symphony.

Tom attended the New England Conservatory of Music (NEC) for three years before leaving to start his professional career in Haifa. While at NEC Tom studied with retired Boston Symphony Principal Trumpet Charles Schlueter and Boston Symphony Trombonist Norman Bolter. After returning from Israel, Tom was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center two times and studied with retired Boston Symphony Trumpeter Roger Voisan and current Boston Symphony Principal Trumpet Thomas Rolfs, with whom he continued to study for three years.
