Mason Bynes

Mason Bynes is a New York based composer, vocalist, and multimedia artist who strives to bridge the gap between genre and sound in order to bring listeners together. In a post-modern tradition, she pulls from various stylistic sources, blurring the line between traditionalism and modernism. Mason received her Master of Music in Composition from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, and she also holds a Bachelor of Music in Composition from the University of North Texas. As a native Texan, she got her start in music by singing gospel music in church choirs, arranging songs for her friends, and performing with various choirs in the Houston area.

Her musical curiosity has sparked a variety of commissions, including: Boston Lyric Opera, Emmanuel Music, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, The Westerlies, National Association of Teachers of Singing, Ex-Aequo, and New York’s chamber orchestra, Parlando. Recently, Mason enjoyed the premiere of her choral work, “Dust Bowl," as the inaugural Florence Price Prize winner presented by the Washington Master Chorale. In her most recent season, her brass quartet piece, “For Rosa," was released on The Westerlies’ new album, “Move," described as “delightfully melodic and jazzy” by Classics Today. Her compositional stylings for voice have been reviewed by The Boston Globe as “elegant” after the 2023 premiere of her operetta, “The Wanderer’s Tethering”. Mason now serves as a career coach at New York University after years of coaching emerging artists at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Mason is thrilled to continue her artistic endeavors in her new favorite city that she now calls home.
